High quality healthcare begins with accurate diagnosis. Medical laboratory science is the use of clinical laboratory tests to screen for, diagnose, monitor and treat diseases.
Medical Laboratory Scientists are laboratory professionals who are part of the medical team of specialists that work together to determine the presence, extent or absence of disease. They perform full range of laboratory tests, from simple blood screen to complex tests to screen for, detect and follow up on all manner of diseases. Medical Laboratory scientists analyze, evaluate and validate laboratory data in seven major areas of clinical laboratory: clinical chemistry, immunology, haematology, transfusion medicine, medical microbiology, parasitology and histopathology and use the information there from to make decisions regarding a patient’s health care. They are health detectives working behind the scenes using state-of –the-art instruments and scientific methods. Greater than 70% of all medical decisions are based on the results of clinical laboratory testing.

A degree in Medical Laboratory Science is extremely versatile. Graduates in medical laboratory science branch out into several areas such as industry, IT, forensic and environmental health, biomedical engineering, and research where they work as quality controllers, analysts, designers and planners. Many of them pursue higher degrees in biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and public health and end up as researchers and university lecturers in these areas. Medical Laboratory Scientists are trained to be self employed and employers of labour.
If you like to solve puzzles and problems by handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced and challenging environment; Medical Laboratory Science is probably the course for you.
If you are looking for a science-based degree that prepares you for advanced studies and a carrier path that develops skill and experience useful in a variety of employment settings, then Medical Laboratory Science may be a good choice you.
