Department Brief History

The Department of Mass Communication, Evangel University Akaeze was established in March 2017 following the approval of the Mass Communication programme by the National University Commission (NUC) team. The Department is domiciled in the College of Arts and Social Sciences of the University.

With a total population of 24 students, the Department began the 2016/2017 academic session with Mr Ekwunife Raphael (Full Time). However as the Department grew in student numerical strength, there was need for more staff and therefore the following were engaged on a periodic basis: Dr. Regina Acholonu (Full Time Staff), Dr. Ojiaku Kalu, Dr.Osita Agha (Full Time), Dr. Basil Uche Onyeneho and Mr Anih Cyprian Afam (Full Time Staff) Subsequently, the Department has experienced commensurate growth both in academic staffing and students’ enrolment. Presently, the Department has been sustained by the above six (6) dedicated academic staff. Since inception, the Department has consistently grown in student enrolment. The Department offers a four year regular Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication (B.Sc Mass Communication). The degree is obtainable through course work and research embodied in a well-documented project. The award is made in both learning and in character.
Philosophy of the Programme
As the world continuously devolves into a global village and with that, a steady sundry forays by made by humans into new professional endeavours – with attendant technologies thereto, there is now a need for an army of well trained and rounded experts in the field of communication to help make sense of the ever growing activities of man – regardless of clime and culture.
This is why a robust programme for teaching and research in the field of mass communication is an all-time imperative for the making of highly skilled newsroom journalists and media practitioners is a sine qua non.
Quite in line with the Evangel University motto of ‘’Education For The Total Man’’, our Mass Communication programme is explicitly and inexorably designed and focused on the training of each student toward imbuing them with the intricate facets of the course of study and demand/opportunities in the industry – this would in turn help the students to discovering their individual selling points and ultimately earning a fulfilled living thereon. In essence, we run a Mass Communication programme that is as practical as it is academic – with a view to honing the hands, the hearts and the heads of the students to eventual profit for self and society.

Aims and Objectives
The programme aims at achieving the following objectives:
i. To offer an undergraduate professionally oriented programme for the aspiring Nigerian Journalists, Communicators, Broadcasters, Public Relations & Advertising Practitioners
ii. To train/or retrain Nigerian Journalists, Public Relations & Advertising Practitioners for leadership positions in the mass media organizations in Nigeria and the world
iii. To raise and sustain the professional status of journalism in Nigeria
iv. To raise the standard of English language competence of the student to a level acceptable in the English-speaking world
v. To provide the Mass Communication students with the opportunity to master the art of communicating, whether in writing or broadcasting for an on-line website
vi. To instil in the Mass Communication students the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure
vii. To train students to appreciate the beauty of literary works and the power of human language
viii. To train and encourage Nigerian Mass Communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively and WRITE OR BROADCAST concisely to the mass audience
ix. To train Nigerian media and women that would act as the trustees of the public trust and that would be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues.
x. To produce Nigerian Mass Communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO KNOW as the Fourth Estate of the Realm

It is expected that at the end the degree programme in Mass Communication, the Mass Communication graduate
a. Should be able to differentiate SOFT News from HARD News, truth from falsehood and responsible Journalism from irresponsible Journalism
b. Should be equipped enough to establish his or her own Newspapers, Magazines, Public Relations and Advertising Agencies, or even his or her own radio/or television stations.
The programme is committed to incubating, hatching and grooming students who would be thorough bred mass communicators, knowledgeable in theories that seek to explain models and processes that uncover behavioural patterns in the lives of people. The programme is committed to training and graduating ethically conscious mass communicators with strong culture, tradition, objectivity and fairness that would serve ministries, companies and consultancy services here in Nigeria and in Diaspora.
SCOPE
The programme provides in-depth knowledge in the following core areasMass Communication:

 Broadcast Journalism
 Public Relations & Advertizing (PRAD)
 Print Journalism
 Development communication
 Photo journalism
 Cinematography, etc

To give a broad based knowledge to students of the Department, the Programme offers courses from other departments in the college as elective courses.
